"Ogemaw" comes from the Anishinaabemowin word "ogimaa," meaning "chief." The county got its name from a skilled and talented indigenous Anishinaabe orator named Little Elk. It was first created by Michigan Legislature in 1840, but it was later incorporated into part of Iosco County in 1867. It came to stand on its own again in 1873, however, and was formally and officially organized in 1875, just a little over a decade after the close of the Civil War. One of the first settlements within Ogemaw County was Ogemaw Springs, which later became a timber hub, but when the industry declined in the area, many settlers moved to West Branch, the official county seat.
